Breakthrough on proposal of mandatory ECDIS at NAV 54

A clear majority in favour of mandatory ECDIS implementation was expressed at the recent NAV 54 meeting of the sub-committee on safety of navigation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) maritime safety committee (MSC).

The implementation phase will be in the period from 2012 till 2018 depending on the vessel category and size, starting from 2012 with new passenger ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards.

The recommendation from NAV54 will be brought up for approval at MSC 85 in November and finally adopted at MSC in May 2009.
